Thanks to this great forum for so many tips as I build my N-scale layout.

Will have 4 power districts & intend to put an 1156 bulb to use on each of them.

Anticipate only running two or three locos at a time (depending on how many grandkids are around!)

But I note that all your tips & explanations refer to HO scale.

I just want to be sure that the 1156 is the right bulb for the smaller scale.

Also, is there an equivalent (27 watt) mini bulb with a screw - tip rather than bayonet-tip fitting?

I have a large supply of a right- angled receptacle for a screw-tip miniature bulb which will light up a coloured lens placed on a panel- it would be a nice touch - my Dad used these on his Lionel 027 layout in the 50s!

Many thanks!

...John

John:

Actually, the 1156 bulb should work even better for N scale because the current draw for N scale locos is slightly less. The 2.1 amp current limit of the 1156 makes it just a bit low for HO, 2.8 - 3 amps is better for the typical modern diesel HO train loaded up with multiple sound locos.

I am not aware of any auto tail light bulbs that are screw base. You can find some 1156 replacement halogens that are special plug-base bulbs, but they cost more than the good ol' cheap bayonet mount auto tail lights.

Good news.

Thanks for the tip!

Now, back to the soldering iron!

I have installed a 1156 bulb in series and can't get it to light with a quarter as in your video. I am running NCE Power Cab with Sb3 amp booster. The bulb is good but the booster shorts first. any sugestions?Rich Elk River RR

Check with NCE to see if the SB3 can have the short trigger delay adjusted. I know with some systems (Lenz and EasyDCC, for instance), the short trigger in the boosters is so fast the bulbs can't react quick enough - and the booster delay is not configurable.

For NCE Procab boosters, the bulbs work great. For Digitrax boosters, you have to go into the Ops Switches and set the short trigger delay to 500 miliseconds (1/2 a second). The factory 100 millisecond setting on the Digitax systems is too fast.
