(As of September 14th)

My original hope was that video volume 5 would be out no later than sometime in November, hence the originally estimated Fall 2007 release. However, things don't always work like you planned ...

In this case, my wife took sick in June and landed in the hospital in July, and has been on the mend on August. There's a possibility of more surgery in October, with November being spent recovering from the surgery.

As you can imagine, when my wife is down, I have to play Mr. Mom and that was the case in July and August, so I got no video production done in those months.

Plus when she took sick in June, I spent a couple of weekends with her in urgent care, and weekends are when we get the most video work done since we can set up shoot all day, and then tear down. Trying to work evenings after work on workdays, after you set up and tear down doesn't leave much time for shooting and rehersals.

It takes about 10 hours of work per finished minute of video, and volume 5 will have about 80 minutes of video, so that's 800 hours of work that has to fit into evenings and weekends since I have a full-time day job as a manager of internet developers.

Okay, so now you know that unplanned things have intervened in my life that will delay the release of volume 5, so where are we at this moment?

Volume 5 has 8 chapters in it. 3 of the chapters have been completely put to bed, and two more chapters have been filmed but not yet edited. That leaves 3 chapters yet that need to be filmed and edited from the get-go.

My guess is that I won't get much done in October or November either if my wife goes back for more surgery. Then comes the holidays in November and December, and my family, for some strange reason, likes to see my face during those times.

Long story short, my best guess as to release of volume 5 is now February 2008. Not what any of us wanted, but it can't be helped with my wife taking ill unexpectedly. Fortunately she's doing much better, but we're not out of the woods yet with a possible second surgery in October as I've mentioned.

I'll post updates on this thread from time to time as to content and progress on volume 5.

Thanks for the update. Most important thing is the full recovery of you wife, and I send my hopes and prayers for that conclusion. I enjoy your videos and will wait patiently for the next release. Carl

(As of January 4th ...)

My wife continues to have medical issues, and has just gone into surgery on Jan 4th. The surgery went well, but there's still at least 6 weeks of recovery where my wife won't be able to do a lot, so I will have to pitch in for her. Unfortunately, this will delay the video release another couple of months to April 2008.

I'd like to have gotten the video done sooner, but the video will just have to wait. Model railroading is great, but my wife comes first!

I hope most people will understand!

Volume 5 is the rest of the scenery how-to's to finish the Tenmile Creek scene we started back in volume 4.

Volume 4 had chapters 1-7, so in volume 5 we cover:

Volume 5: Scenery and bridges - Part 2

* Chapter 8: Modeling water effectively
* Chapter 9: Hints and tips on bridge installation
* Chapter 10: Track ballasting and weathering
* Chapter 11: Hints and tips on tunnel installation
* Chapter 12: From the ground up - realistic tall grass
* Chapter 13: From the ground up - bushes and ground cover
* Chapter 14: From the ground up - realistic deciduous trees made fast
* Chapter 15: From the ground up - realistic conifer trees made fast

One of the very cool things that will be in chapter 12 is how to build your own static grass applicator. Here's a photo of the home-built grass applicator next to the Noch Grass Master:

The Noch Grass Master cost $160 ... the home-built static grass applicator shown above cost roughly $30 to build and it actually has a slightly stronger static charge than the Noch applicator!

In volume 5 I show you step-by-step, how to build this static grass applicator shown in the photo above.

This one tip will save you more than the cost of a subscription to the whole series! I try to give you many such expert tips throughout the series, in hopes that you're actually money ahead for having bought the series.

Here's a quick YouTube video demoing the home-made static grass applicator that will be featured in video volume 5.

As you can see the $30 home-made applicator works very well, and in fact, the static charge in the home-made unit is slighly stronger than the $160 Noch Grass Master.

Hi Joe,

Just wondering if February 2008 is still a good date for V5? I've really enjoyed the DVDs and ready to learn more!

Thanks

Joe:

Nope, its now April 2008. My wife's health issues kept going on through the holidays and into January when I thought we had dealt with the issue.

The good news is we finally opted for surgery and she's clearly on the mend now, doing much better.

The bad news is the release of volume 5 has slipped two months, but family comes first. It is what it is.

One other bright lining to this cloud is we're in the process of now offering chapters from the videos as downloads for $1.99 - $2.99 each. The chapters from volume 5 that are finished will be available in the next few weeks on this site for those who just can't wait.

I also think we'll probably be making the chapters from video 5 available to subscribers via the web somehow for free. Have to noodle on that one for a bit -- once I decide how we want to do that I'll post it here.

Joe; Dale here. I finally got reestablished on the site and am trying to get re-motivated on model railroading instead of the full size version so much.

I was sorry to hear about Patty and hope that she is doing better and getting back to her ornery self again.

To tell the truth I wasn't aware that the time frame for vol. 5 had come so I am still looking forward to it. Now a little more than ever.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the series to date and was very pleased to see the changes to the site and the new volumes in the video series, namely the Live Op Sessions. I plan to be a regular again to this forum and to get caught up in the whole Siskiyou operation once more. Stay well and give Patty our best. Dale

Nice to hear from you, and yes, the wife is doing very well again, she's feelin' her oats!

Volume 5 production is going full swing, with an April release looking very likely at this point!
